In order for Ragdoll cats to live their full expected lifespan of 12 - 15 years, they must receive the right preventivve care. In this case, care starts even before the kittens are conceived. Genetic technologies allow Danu Ragdolls to select breeding pairs that test negative for HCM and PKD genes. This technology enables us to Spread The Meow; positive vibes and positive memories!

Are Ragdoll Cats Affected by Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) and Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD)?

I love breeding cats and I love science. Danu gives me an opportunity to nerd out on genetics and to have technical conversations with our veterinarian. But most of all I love Mother Nature’s hand in the breeding process. Whatever you call her, God, the Universe, or something else, for me, she always uniquely touches each of our blue eyed, fluffy Ragdoll kittens. This is my favorite part! The flame shapes on a blue or seal colorpoint Ragdoll’s nose, the size of the mittens on front paws of a chocolate lynx Ragdoll kitten, the gentle and curious temperament of a purebred blue bicolor Ragdoll kitten, or the vibrancy of Ragdoll’s blue eye color are examples of traits we as breeders are looking to preserve and enhance within the bounds of TICA’s standards. And all we can do is select our girls and boys when the time is right and Mother Nature does the rest. So elegant and magnificent! In regards to the known genetic health conditions known to impact Ragdoll cats, Danu does due diligence to make sure your furbaby lives a long and healthy life with you, HCM and PKD free. What is Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy? What is Polycystic Kidney Disease? Here’s a concise description of these two genetic conditions that, if genetically undetected, can affect the Ragdoll Cat Breed.

Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a heart condition seen in Ragdoll cats, characterized by the thickening of the heart muscle, which can impede normal heart function. This genetic disorder can lead to symptoms such as lethargy, rapid breathing, and in severe cases, heart failure. Breeders can reduce the risk of HCM in their breeding stock by performing genetic testing to identify carriers of the mutation associated with HCM. By excluding affected cats from breeding programs and selecting only those with clear genetic profiles, breeders can significantly lower the incidence of this condition in their lines. Additionally, regular veterinary screening and maintaining comprehensive health records of breeding cats can further support the goal of producing healthier kittens.

Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) is a genetic disorder in cats, characterized by the development of multiple fluid-filled cysts in the kidneys, which can impair kidney function over time. This condition can lead to symptoms such as increased thirst, frequent urination, weight loss, and lethargy. Again, by performing genetic testing to identify carriers of the mutation associated with PKD, breeders can significantly lower the incidence of this condition in their lines.
